School Spotlight: Elon University

I first was introduced to Elon many years ago when my colleague, Rob, always seemed to recruit strong Elon alumni into the MAcc program at OSU. Elon has continued to grow in popularity and selectivity, and is a terrific choice for students who are looking for a mid-sized liberal arts college in the Southeast that places a strong emphasis on global and experiential learning. Here are 5 fun facts about Elon University:

1) Elon has been recognized for the second year in a row for it excellence in undergraduate teaching, earning the #2 spot in the country on U.S. News & World Report's list. Elon students are extremely supported. The name Elon is Hebrew for Oak. Each entering student is given an acorn at convocation to mark the beginning of their college journey, and an oak sapling at graduation to acknowledge their growth and the beginning of a new journey after college.

2) Elon is also known for its global programs, sending 80% of its students abroad and guaranteeing access to 100% of its students through an endowment that will help cover costs regardless of a student's financial circumstances. The Institute for International Education and U.S. News have given Elon a #1 ranking for study abroad and students can choose from a wide variety of global programs. Elon has centers in Dunedin, Florence, Shanghai and London and has partnerships with numerous other programs and institutions around the world.

3) All Elon students are required to complete experiential learning through one of five Elon Experiences - Study Abroad, Internships, Undergraduate Research, Leadership, and Service Learning. Students actually receive an Elon Experiences transcript to document their work in these areas.

4) Kiplinger's Personal Finance has ranked Elon as a top-30 private institution for "Best College Value." Elon offers merit-based, talent-based and need-based awards, as well as Fellows and Scholars programs for outstanding students interested in a deeper learning experience in specific academic areas. More unique scholars programs include Change Makers Scholars and Elon Sports Vision Scholars.

5) Elon has many student organizations through the School of Communication - their own TV station, radio station, literary and art journal, among them. Two groups are specifically focused on elevating women in entertainment and sports, Women of the Elon Entertainment Empire and Women Influencers in Sports. Speaking of sports, the Elon Phoenix participate in NCAA Division I sports through the Colonial Athletic Association.
